LANDSCAPE ROOMS
Our objective was to create a more open plan arrangement in what was a closed off 1940’s territorial style Santa Fe home. That openness extends programmatically now into the landscape as well.
By taking cues from the plan layout of the house, we began to program landscape “rooms” around the perimeter of the property. From the living room, an outdoor deck for living and a sandbox for the client’s children connected the two spaces Through double doors out of the dining area, an outdoor table extends into the landscape with a backdrop of bamboo for privacy from neighbors. From the kitchen window, the clients watch their raised vegetable garden grow food. From the home office, they are able to work while watching their children ride on the hardscape “racetrack” and play on the apple tree swing.
Throughout the property, we deliberately designed a landscape that addressed both adults and children, without looking like a playground. Concrete paving tiles arranged in a hopscotch pattern along the vegetable garden are transformed with temporary chalk numbers, for example. A bocce ball court for adults is also a place for horseshoes with the family.
