POJOAQUE FIRE STATION LANDSCAPE
Inspired by the element of fire, from its coloration to its movement, to its sculptural character, Surroundings created a landscape of plantings that evoke these qualities throughout the season, especially during the fall months.
Layered aromatic swaths of western sand cherry form the lower level of planting beds located next to an outdoor gathering space for the resident firefighters. An intermediate swath of little bluestem ‘blaze’ and big daddy bluestem become the backdrop and fill a raised concrete planter to create visual privacy against a busy highway. Accents of ‘gro-low’ sumac will become bright red and orange in fall and form another fragrant layer of color to complement a row of purple smoke trees.
The planting palette is composed of drought tolerant species and will be watered with a temporary irrigation system until they are established. Supplemental water will be obtained from curb cuts and sheet run-off from the large areas of asphalt parking already on site as well as building roofs.
